A Champagne Black-Laced Skirt

I made a champagne skirt last night with leftover champagne fabric and lots of leftover black laces from old cosplays that I retired from.

Everything was made on a whim, and in the end, I am actually more pleased with it than with my other original creations.

I can't wait to wear it when I go out one of these upcoming days.

Matching Wedding Purse!

Last night, I decided to give making a matching wedding purse one more try--since I failed so many times >^< ~~

I decided to use a more simpler approach, then, sewed on matching ruffles with the self-made champagne bias tape.  Then, lastly, I hand-sewn the faux pearl-beaded lace trim at the very top all around the purse before finally adding in the velcro (inside the purse).

Now that I've made the matching wedding purse to go with my wedding cosplay, I have something I can put things inside--and it matches!--while Aoi and I go around the con.

Hope that you're enjoying the progress of my costume-making!

Favorites: A&A Textiles

My newly favorite fabric shop has recently had this fabric (above) come in.

Ahh~ it drives me crazy because I want to make a skirt out of it.

If you ever get the chance to be around in the Central Valley of California, you should definitely hit up A&A Textiles.

Their store is all LA-style, meaning that there's fabric everywhere--but they're not organized into aisles or shelves.  It's more like a you-hunt-for-it thing.  But that's one of the best charms about it!

Their staff is pretty chilled and really easy to talk to, and they're always ready to help a customer out.

Other than A&A Textiles, I also want to write about Paom, Print All Over Me--an online print shop where you upload an image onto a template shirt/skirt/dress/and etc.

In fact, I set up a store there: lovely-rose

And here are my current featured designs inspired by Japanese pop culture and geeky stuff:

Thanks for being here, readers!

Cosplay Wig Review: Dark brown Cosplay Wig

Cosplay Wig color:  Dark brown

Cosplay Wig seller:  jcpunk

Overall Cosplay Wig Rating: 100% positive feedback, 10/10

This is my wig review with an Ebay seller, jcpunk.  I recently bought the cosplay wig and decided to write a post about it!

When I first put on the wig, I noticed that it was very thick--and very soft!  Its fringes are long enough for anyone to cut it to their liking or preference--and the wig is also heat-resistant or can be straightened under 180 - 200 C (356 F and plus).  There are no "bald" spots no matter how I move or how I part the wig.  Overall, it's a really pretty wig and feels very high-quality for under $20!  One of the best 17 bucks that I've spent!

I wore the wig for a good amount of the day, about 4-5 hours--and I finally decided that unlike some wigs that I own--it's a really snug and very comfy fit around my head.  It feels so natural and doesn't hurt at all.  I also feel like the wig is very breathable and doesn't itch.

I can't find any cons with this one at all, and I'm very, very happy with it!

Cosplay 101: How to Start Off and End a Convention Hotel Stay

So, of course, when you're going off to attend an out-of-town convention, you and your friends will need a place to stay at!

When you've all unloaded and brought in your bags and luggages into the hotel room, you know that you each have to claim an area or corner where you'd have to put your stuff at.

Is this going to be your first time?

Please, please don't make the same mistakes I did when I started off cosplaying at out-of-town anime conventions >^< ~~

But don't worry!

I'll tell you how:

1.  Claim a corner or area where you can haul in your bags and luggages--and stick to it.

Make sure your stuff won't be in the way of people walking in or around the hotel room though!  Always try to keep it clean before and after you dig in for your things, so your roommates won't trip or injure themselves during the con.  Also, make sure to close and zip off your bags and luggages to prevent anything from spilling out or losing anything.

2.  Try to avoid drinking water bottles that were set there by the hotel staff or anything.

Unless it's specifically said to be "free."  You'd be charged with the costs if it doesn't say so.

3.  Be gentle with everything in the hotel room!

Unless you want to be hit with more costs.  Just don't break or rip anything, please.

4.  Always try to keep the overall room clean.

It's important to always try to keep the hotel room clean, and if you can't, have everyone clean up altogether at least once or twice throughout the con.  This will prevent things from being lost and will lessen the stress you'll have when you can't find that mascara you brought in or the eyeliner you just bought recently.  Believe me, this will help make your con stay less stressful and more clean!

5.  On the first day, set up a rule that when you invite friends or strangers over, make sure to inform everyone else--or just don't bring anyone at all.

The more, the merrier, right?

Well, unfortunately, that's not the way with most people.  Personally, my friends and I try to avoid bringing over people we just met into our hotel room.  During my first and second  year of attending cons, I've lost many, many makeup items because friends would invite strangers into the room without telling any of us and have them borrow my things and other people's stuff--without asking the original owner.  Please be well aware that although it's great that you've met and made new friends, the thing is--you just met them and you'll be held responsible for anything that goes missing afterward.

6.  Make sure that there is a place to sleep for everyone.  EVERY ONE.

It's my pet peeve when the majority thinks it's okay for one or two people to--not have a place to sleep.  That's not okay!  How'd you feel if you don't have a place to sleep?  It's uncomfortable--and it'll make them grouchy the next day--and probably cause con-drama.  Always remember that if you're a true friend, try to make sure everyone has a bed or some sort.

Good sleep means rest--and having rest for a con means having a good time and having money well-spent on the hotel.

What helps make this situation better is that a friend of mine brings a set of air-beds/mattresses with her to the con when we room together.  This increases the chances of everyone (usually about 6 of us or more) having a place to sleep on.  Also, try to bring extra pillows or blankets when you can because you never know when there's not enough to go around.

7.  Try to help each other when you can.  It's all about teamwork!

Is your roommate/friend having trouble with their false eyelashes?

If you're a pro at putting them on, help your friend out!  It never hurts!

Helping each other out when you're all getting ready for the con is an experience that brings each other closer than ever before, and with all good experiences--that means making good memories about your stay there!  Not only that, you all will get ready faster!

8.  If you're tired or anything but ready for the con, take breaks by retreating to your hotel room.

No, seriously.  This helps on so many levels for me and my friends throughout so many conventions! Whenever there is a time where you're exhausted or stressed out or want to just sit on something comfy like a bed--go back to your hotel room and rest or take a nap.  Just let your group know or give someone a heads-up before doing so to prevent search parties!

9.  To make everything more fun, plan get-togethers!

Whether you have friends are staying at another hotel or maybe it's just your group,  take a break from the con once in a while--and get something to eat together!  This adds more fun and helps make more good memories for everyone while also, making sure the entire group is well-fed and hydrated!

10.  When checking out of the hotel room, put everything back the way it was before you came in.

Clean up your messes--put back that ironing board--and make the bed.  Remember, you're not just con-goers or cosplayers.  You're representing your cosplay community and want to leave a good lasting impression on the hotel staff when they check on your room even if you're leaving.  Put back everything back the way it was before you came in.  It'll make things easier for the maids when they come in to clean up for the next guest.

And so, I hope that you find this very helpful for your next con hotel stay!

Sincerely,

Yoko ~~

Anime Review: Rokka no Yuusha (Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers)

Have you ever played those Fantasy-genre RPG games where your player is the main protagonist and it turns out that they're the //le gasp// chosen one who can save the world from evil?

Although Rokka no Yuusha falls into that same category (except that there are six chosen ones in total), what really got me sucked into the anime though was the interesting Aztec-inspired character designs and setting.  So, I gave this anime series a chance.

Rokka no Yuusha takes off when a  young man, Adlet Mayer, interrupts a sacred tournament held by Nochetanya's kingdom.  He beats a good number of the tournament's participants in an attempt to prove himself to be the world's strongest man before being arrested by the royal guards and throw into prison.  There, he meets the Princess Nochetanya and mistakes her for being a maid.  Because she didn't reveal who she truly is, Nochetanya learns that Adlet believes he is the strongest man in the world and that means he should be, with no doubt, one of the six chosen Braves of Six Flowers.

Time passes, and eventually, on the day where six chosen ones are revealed, Adlet comes to bear the Flower marking--and to his surprise, Princess Nochetanya immediately frees him from his prison to set off on their adventure to save the world from the demon king, Majin.

But when all of the Chosens meet, there's seven of them, and so, they all suspect that one of them is an imposter; hence, their enemy.  Unfortunately, the suspicions fall onto Adlet himself!

My first impression of the anime is that well, "This is interesting!"  Yes, the show starts off with an ancient legend--but even the art style was based off Aztec art--and then, when I saw Adlet Mayer with his poncho and unique outfit with all the tricks up his sleeves...that was it.  I watched the first episode and thought, "Wow! Why haven't I seen the PV for this one?"  I later found out that there light novels that the anime show was taken from--but I just thought this is it.  Good ol' RPG fantasy genre where the chosen gets to go on this journey--but there are six of them or seven--and this is what I find refreshing from all the new shows coming out.  It's good to have something familiar but also have a nice twist to it--once in a while, for me.

But Adlet was what really captured my attention because he's polite, well-mannered--and a genuine good guy--but he's also very confident--or some will say, arrogant--that he's the STRONGEST guy in the world!  He trashed that sacred tournament like nothin'--and he was beating up those other dudes--but he didn't just fight! He had those smoke bombs and all sorts of tricks.

The main character was so FULL of surprises--right off the bat--and I think that's one of the reasons why I had to give in and watch the first episode.

And the second.

Then, the third.

Now, I'm up to date (Episode 7 is out).

The three Braves are at the temple where they can meet up with the
others.  Image source to bonproduit1.tk
I also felt like despite him being the main character, he could be the Braves' "under-dog"--even though it doesn't seem like it, at first.  The Braves seem to recognize each other or at least, heard of one another--all except for Adlet because he was what they called the "least likely" or "unexpected" candidate for being a chosen one.  Again, he's full of surprises and never fails to do that.  In a way, that brings us to a more relatable level with Adlet.

All of the Braves leave a good impression on me, overall.  They're all sharply contrasting in every way--fighting style, background (one of them being an assassin), physical appearance, color swatches, and etc.  I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all of them in one setting especially because it exposes each of them to the types of people they're not used to being around with and their reactions and social interactions with one another.

On the down-side, personally, I felt like the anime was a bit slow-paced up until they met with the other Braves.  Now, that could just be me.  Other than that, everything about Rokka no Yuusha is awesome--and I'm looking forward to see more future episodes!

And so, in the end, I give Rokka no Yuusha a rating of 5 out of 5 stars: ★★★★

If you enjoy fantasy/action genres and perhaps, love playing RPG games, then, this is the anime for you!

Hope you enjoy the review!

Yoko~

Our Shingeki no Sexy! cosplay shoot

All of these pictures were taken at SacAnime (Summer/SacSummer) about 2 years ago (September, 2013), with a friend of mine, Neeka Cosplay.  It was pretty hot, I remembered, wearing these long-sleeved faux leather jackets--but they were really well-made by my boyfriend, Aoi Dove Cosplay.

At the time, none of the local stores had matching boots that even closely resembled
SNK's boots.  Photo credit to AnimeCraft Entertainment.

Cosplayers: Eren Jaeger (Aoi Dove Cosplay), Mikasa Ackerman (Neeka Cosplay),
and Sasha Braus (YOKO Cosplay).

I tried to act natural when modeling, and I think that's a good key element there when posing.  But try to exaggerate--and go with it, naturally.  To this day, I do my best to do both of that.

Both Aoi and I plan to do more SNK cosplays in the future.  But for now, we're waiting for the 2nd season of the Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) anime.

Hope that you enjoy the pictures!

Anime Review: Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma

Water is boiling in the pot while warm steam is floating above.

Dicing the soft and freshly rinsed mushroom into bite-sized bits.

Chopping the vegetables at about finger's length.

Marinating the beef roast for more than a few hours, allowing the meat to soak up the sweet juice.

These are only some of the terms used by people who are familiar with the art of cooking or those who have spent many years in the kitchen.  But then, there are the masters.

The masters of cooking.

Chefs.

And they've either refined their skills through experience or through culinary school.

Or in this case, culinary high school.

Introducing Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma, this anime is about 15-year-old Soma Yukihira, who dreams of surpassing his father, Jouichirou's cooking skills--and taking over the family restaurant--when all of a sudden, Soma's father decides to close up shop and goes to America to cook for 5-star hotels.  Soma is sent to go study at an elite culinary high school/academy where only 10% of the class graduates.  It is only there when Jouichirou challenges him over the phone--to survive the academy or don't even dream of surpassing him!  With his fighting spirit being re-ignited, Soma is determined to be not just one of the 10% graduates--he's going to take the top spot!

My first impression of this show, though many of my friends insist that it's a really good anime, is that it's going to be just about food (Not a great impression, at first).  Now, the last time I've ever watched a cooking-genre anime is "Fighting Foodons"--and so, I can understand how it appeals to my brother, who was a big fan of FF as a kid growing up.

I love the opening theme song as it takes me to feeling rather nostalgic, like people making good memories with friends and pursuing their dreams and always keeping their good memories close.  It made me remember when I was at around Soma's age, just starting out high school.

What's even better?

That opening theme song is then later sung by one of the FW characters, Satoshi Isshi, when he was drunk on rice wine/sake in the dorm party.  I was overwhelmingly full of joy when I heard him singing it!  I love it when anime series do that--re-using their songs to play an actual part in the episode(s)!

The character cast is very versatile, all with contrasting personalities and a great deal of different backgrounds, each unique down to their cooking styles or specialities.  The character designs are colorful in every way (like, literally, with the hair colors and all)--and I enjoy watching each episode (episode 18 is currently out) as Soma's group of friends grows and grows.

Although I'm not completely up to date with the anime as I've just recently started watching the series, the animation of both the cooking and the cooking ingredients coming together as a dish really works as to generate excitement and interest of the viewers.  It really drew my attention as I was watching Episode 1 when Soma was creating his "Gotcha" pork-roast (bacon-covered and boiled potatoes) for the real-estate agent-lady--and the way the anime's food is drawn and presented?  Simply delicious and making you want to cook as well!

Soma's "Gotcha" pork-roast dish.  Image source to
shokugekinosoma.wikia.com
On the other side, one of the very few negative down-sides of "Food Wars" is that yes, the animation is so greatly exaggerated for my taste--that when people eat food, their clothes explode or other sexual-related reaction scenes come up.  Honestly, it makes me wonder whether or not I should take the show seriously.  Also, what bothers me a little bit is that the main character, Soma, is the typical hero--the typical underdog who overcomes his obstacles through sheer willpower and determination--then, add some luck or prodigy skills into the mix--and there!  You've got yourself a Soma.  Plus, his mother is missing or presumed to be deceased.  And like most anime parents, they sent their child to live on their own and to star in their own show.

While I do find it overdone--his good moral code and fighting spirit which is found in every typical anime underdog,  I also have deep respect his cool, even temper when dealing with "rude customers" (Me being a person who's been in the food service industry...admire that trait a lot)--because I, well, can't stand them.  And well, there's already a good handful of hot-tempered protagonists in the other anime series.  What also persuades me to watch furthermore of the "Food Wars"--is the fact that the show's got such a huge cast--but every one of them has their own cooking specialities and the people's reactions to each dish cooked by each character is different.  In that way, as the anime reveals each of their skills and what they literally bring to the kitchen--it really is..well, a melting pot of interesting events and outcomes--especially since "Food Wars" is a competition to become among the 10%!

Overall, I think the show caters to those who are fanatics of cooking--or food lovers.  So, if you like watching people cook (& engage in competitions/shokugeki duels), this is the show for you!  In this case, I rate "Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma"--4 out of 5 stars ★★★★☆

Hope that you enjoy this review!

Sewing Classes?

My cosplay selfie as Christa from SNK,
Shingeki no Kyojin.
There's a new costume shop in town, and they were planning to offer sewing classes in September.  When I went to the store's grand opening with my boyfriend and my brother to check it out, I became interested in their promotions of the classes and may end up enrolling in their beginners course because I'm only self-taught and I learn better in a more structured school-like environment.  I have my own sewing machine, and so that makes things a bit easier for them.

As some of you may know, I wish to learn more about sewing techniques and the general basics of sewing to have a better foundation knowledge for fashion design classes that I'll be taking later in 2016 (it's one of the core requirements; otherwise, I won't be able to take any of the classes unless I take a pre-requirement course--but I want to jump right in immediately during my first year).

The entry form to enter the city fair's Clothing department contest is due in September too, so I'll have to see when I can finally turn my form in with the money fee.

After September though, I'll be applying to college since I'm ready to go back to school.

Then, of course, in January, FAFSA.

There's long list of many more things to do, but I'm excited for 2015-2016!

And hopefully, you--my readers--are as well.

Take care,

Yoko~

Anime Review: Aoharu x Machinegun

aoharuxmachinegun.wikia.com
Honestly, I was first drawn to this anime because one of my favorite typical stories features a cross-dressing girl--and well, the words "deathless death match" caught my attention too. I can relate to cross-dressing girls because well, at one point while growing up, I was the tomboy of the family--always playing pretend cop games with the boys and getting into fist fights with them too to solve my problems.  I insisted on having short hair because it was a hassle, trying to take care of long hair--up until I started the second or third grade.

The anime, "Aoharu x Machine-gun" stars a high school student named Hotaru, Student Council President, who has a strong sense of justice and not afraid to get into a fight with those whom she deems deserving of karma.

Oh, and she's super athletic!

Then, she meets Masamune, her next door neighbor--who also turns out to be //le gasp// a popular Host.  After challenging him to a fight, Masamune introduces Hotaru to the "Survival Games", which is essentially airsoft war games--you know, airsoft guns.  During their first match of "Survival Games", Hotaru damages tons of things in the Host Club, such as a table and so on forth.  Although she's super athletic, she still loses to Masamune who then clears up the misunderstanding that caused the fight in the first place--and declares that she will join his own "Survival Games" team, Toy Gun Gun, to pay off her debt (cost of property damages)!

My first impression from the first episode is that "Oh, this is just like Ouran High School Host Club! Except with air soft guns!"

The opening theme song was very catchy, Hotaru's energetic personality and strong sense of justice was definitely interesting--and something I found relatable, there's the "hot guy"--Masamune, and then, there's the "dark past" that is hinted in the next four episodes as well--each time, making you want to watch more...to find out more.

It kept me and my boyfriend coming back for each episode, so we ended up marathoning the first episode up until episode 5 (Episode 6 is out now) in one evening.

The character cast were actually contrasting in personalities and there was a great range so far from what I've seen--and that's great!

I think the only down-side is that if you can't stand "Ouran High School Host Club" or a story slightly similar to it, it's not the show for you--but if you liked OHSHC--and action?  Then, this is your cup of tea, I believe.  As for rating, I give it 4 out of 5 stars:  ★★★★☆

And so, readers, I hope that you'll check out "Aoharu x Machine-gun" especially if you're interested in air soft guns, a cross-dressing protagonist, action, and drama!

Yoko~

Sailor Moon Fashion Dress in Progress!

Just gotta add more to the bow.
Hello, readers~ Remember the sketch from my previous post?  I've gotten pretty far with it last night and currently taking a break from it today.  But it's coming together pretty well!  There may be small changes to it in the end but so far, looking close to the picture!

I'm thinking of wearing it to an anime/cosplay-related event in the future when I don't feel like cosplaying or perhaps, at a con on the last day or Day 0 when we pick up our badges.

I have long hair, so I may put it up in high pigtails or attempt to make buns-buns with them!

Making the top wasn't so hard--since I used a dress as a reference to trace the shape from.  It's made out of white georgette silk, a yard sample that I got online when looking for good materials for my Asuna wedding dress.

As for the bow, I cut it out of the red fabric that was supposed to be for a cosplay that I haven't gotten into making.

Anyway, here's my progress work so far:

I just need to also work on the third layer of the skirt part.
Not completely sewn together yet because I still need
to work on the bow and skirt parts.

I hope that you enjoyed viewing the pictures!

Thank you,

Yoko~

A sneak peek of my Sailor Moon dress!

What's this?

A new outfit that I'll be working on while taking a break from cosplay-making.

I have leftover fabrics that kept piling on over the years, and it so happened that most of them are white, blue, red, and plaid.

Changes may be made to this outfit.
I even have a personal art blog: pink-shiba
I've changed up the Sailor Moon design into something I can wear every day--during both summer and fall!  Still debating whether or not I should keep the bow red or plaid...

Right now as you can see, this is just a sneak peek re-design sketch.  I've already made the top this morning and haven't taken pictures yet of the work in progress.  As I move along to work on the bow and add the top's straps, I'll take pictures!!!

Yoko~
